Last night I was lying in bed watching TV. I was just drifting off in that dream like state where you are sort of awake but you are almost asleep. I was doing that when I thought I saw something fly over my bed. First I checked to make sure it wasn't that handsome sparkly vampire guy from the movies. Sadly friends, it was not.
Maybe I imagined it? Just to be safe, I woke up my husband and told him I was pretty sure an enourmous killer moth or a small bird or bat was in the room. He was in the midst of dismissing my ridiculous claim when it flew overhead again. Then it flew over again. It was circling around my head. It was a BAT!

I ducked under the covers and my husband took off to find something to catch it with. Yes, catch it. Not kill it. Are you aware that there's some weird bat killing something or other going around and bats are in short supply? It's true (I think). I love bats, sort of. They eat bugs and I don't like bugs. In 2 years living out in the country I have seen maybe 3 bats. That's not normal. I noticed one the other night swooping around the front yard and I was excited. Imagine that. I was excited. Seriously someone told me there is something killing the bats around here and they control the mosquito population and that's why there are so many of those nasty things around.
OK back to my drama. Now Batty (that's what I call him now) is swooping around my room. I'm pretty sure he wanted to attack me. Bats can carry Rabies. Rabies means needles. "Must catch bat" I whispered from under the covers.
I can't say for sure what went down in the minutes that followed. As I mentioned I was hiding under the covers fearing for my life. I heard something whipping around (a towel perhaps?) then I heard a thud. That's when I figured the bat was a goner. My husband would have made a bigger thud if the bat took him down.

At last it was safe to come out from under the covers. Good thing. I was running out of air. My husband scooped up Batty and took him outside to his final resting destination. I was a little sad. Batty was not scary at all, other than the swooping around my bedroom in the middle of the night threatening to bite me and give me rabies. If not for all of that bad behavior, I would have been fine with him hanging out watching TV with me. Manners matter.
So it took me a while to fall asleep after that. Can you imagine? Good times. Did you ever have a run in with a bat? Are you a catch and release type or a kill 'em dead type?

OH HOLY MOLY! That EXACT thing happend to me once. Except my cat was alerted to it first, then it BUZZED us in bed. I went under the covers and hubs trapped it in the bathroom where he beat it with the toilet brush.
ReplyDeleteick.
we threw that brush away too.
Your brave, Im not sure I could have fallen back to sleep...I would have kept thinking it had brought friends...lol
ReplyDeleteHa! I loved this story. I can not even begin to think how terrifying that would be. Good thing you husband was ready to save the day. I agree with Steven Anthony. If I had seen that, I would have been worried about what else was in there. It's like when you see a bug or something gross. You start to think there is more. Hope you get a great nights sleep tonight = )
ReplyDeleteYeah, that would completely freak me out and keep me from falling asleep for many nights. No joke...at the 3 week mark of having a newborn I told my husband that there was a bird in our room. I think I hallucinated it, he was on duty that night :)
ReplyDeleteIn your house! In your bedroom! OMG! The only run-in I've ever had with bats was them flying over pools at night.
ReplyDeleteOMG...I would have died. I too love bats, when they are outside eating those mosquitos. I once had one swoop into my hair but it quickly flew away. We have had a few living in our attic but thankfully they have not come down into our house. Poor Batty :(
ReplyDeleteUsed to have run ins with bats all the time in the rafters of our cabins at summer camp in the Adirondacks. We have bats here, as do my parents, but so far (knock on wood!) none have ventured inside of the house!
